What strange winds blew this Chicago native to tiny Assisi in Umbria?
I ask myself this question even after more than two decades living here! In the meantime, I have written about this gorgeous town and region I now call home for online and print travel publications, helped produce a PBS travel series on Italy, raised two boys and two dogs, and welcomed travelers to two guest accommodations, one right in the center of Assisi and one in the lush Mount Subasio Park just minutes from town. I've learned to cook my pasta al dente and never say no to a good glass of wine. And on those magical evenings when the sun is setting over the Umbrian Valley, turning the rolling hills and stone villages a deep rose while church bells ring and swallows swoop over the rooftops, I sip Sagrantino on my terrace and know that it was this that brought me to this magical place.
Assisi is one of the most beautiful Medieval hilltowns in all of Italy, built of pink stone on the slopes of Mount Subasio and home to some of the world's most precious art and architecture.
Our apartments are all perfectly located in the center of Umbria to easily visit all the famed hilltowns of this region, and the neighboring regions of Tuscany and Le Marche.
This pilgrimage trail brings thousands of pilgrims to Assisi, the Saint's birthplace, each year. Our apartments are the ideal base for those either beginning of finishing their journey.
Our countryside apartments are deep in the Mount Subasio Regional Park, and Umbria is dotted with breathtaking parks and natural areas, including Lake Trasimeno, the Sibilline National Park, and the Marmore waterfalls.
Umbria has a thriving wine country just a short drive from Assisi, where guests can visit family-run wineries, sample local wines including Sagrantino and Orvieto Classico, and see some of the most breathtaking countryside in the area.
