Great article Rebecca. I tried your method with my first two kids, Anna & Luca, but my ex-husband Francesco was less than willing for some bizarre reason. He spoke only Italian to me, even in front of others, and then spoke only English with our kids. I wish I could have convinced him otherwise but at least they had the benefit of bi-annual visits to or from their nonni in Florence. They understand well enough and I’ve forced them (note the word FORCED) to take Italian in school but it would have been much better had they learned the natural way that your boys have.
I loved seeing their photo in the blog post. They are really handsome and look so much like you!
